WSSINDEX Conversion Utilities Available
Utilities, not included in the standard distribution package, are
available for conversion of the following formats to WSSINDEX
databases. To date, these are the only formats for which
conversion utilities have been explicitly requested.
Backup Master - not exactly what I had in mind when I first
thought about conversion utilities. This is a commercial disk
backup program which produces a "history file" listing where
backup copies of files are stored. The history file is
converted into a WSSINDEX database.
Dos File Tracker - this is a disk cataloguer sold by IBM; a
fairly straightforward conversion.
If you have a disk catalog maintained by another program which
you would like to convert to a WSSINDEX database, you can send me
any documentation you have about the disk storage format, a
sample database including a printout, any ascii disk output the
program can produce, and a copy of the indexing program (if that
is possible without violating any license agreements), and I will
attempt to produce a conversion utility. No guarantees that I
will be successful or quick, but if I do produce a custom
conversion utility, you should feel more than the usual moral
pressure to become a registered user. My hope is that there are
only a few popular competing programs out there, and that I will
be able to build up a small library of conversion utilities which
will meet most needs.
Users may obtain any of the above conversion routines subject to
the same conditions as a WSSINDEX upgrade. That is,
1. The first time I send out a disk to a registered user, there
is no charge unless I supply the media, in which case the
charge is $2.
2. Subsequent disks sent to registered users require a $5 fee,
plus $2 if I supply the media.
3. Non-registered users can send $5 (plus a formatted disk or $2
media fee) for an "evaluation" copy (which isn't any different
from a regular copy).
